“In many European capitals, the Crimean events have been a real jolt. For the first time, many are beginning to understand that the narrative is wrong: Russia is not a flawed Western power. Russia is an anti-Western power with a different, darker vision of global politics.”

Anyone interested in accurately gauging the future actions of the Putin regime in expanding its “Russia World” borders needs only one barometer and that is available in the person of Yana Amelina, a Russian analyst who is thought to have not only strong ties into the Kremlin but also a willingness to tell all. Reading the commentary below, we are lead to the inescapable conclusion that we will soon learn if Barack Obama, Angela Merkel and other Western leaders have the intestinal fortitude to deal with the greatest threat to democracy and world peace of the 21st century.

"’The biggest mistake is viewing Putin's aggression against Ukraine as a local conflict. Sure, you can ignore it ‘for the sake of world peace,’ but Putin has taken to destroying the world. He boldly said that modern democratic international institutions are not effective; they don't work and should be abolished. Actually, he launched his war against the world earlier, when he supported the division of Moldova, when he unleashed carnage in Georgia, when he headed the global club of dictators and continues to defend its members – from Gaddafi to Assad - to the very end,’ she said.”

The final signing will be delayed until after the May presidential election in Ukraine

Having lived in Putin’s Russia for quite a long time, [Stanislav] Belkovsky begins, he knows all too well “what kind of country this is” – one of “total corruption, government vulgarity, money laundering, and disdain for the individual.”  Consequently, “the unification of Crimea with Russia is a defeat for Crimea and not a victory,” whatever the propagandists say.

During a meeting today with U.S. Under Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, Acting President and Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada emphasized that "people on Maidan died for their children to have a future and live decently in a democratic, European and non-corrupted country".

“…general message from the US yesterday was that we are serious about this, and will be acting to tighten the sanctions regime around Russia over the coming days if we do not see de-escalation”

In Moscow…the propaganda machine has changed its message, Dmitry Bykov says.  Earlier, it spoke about Crimea “carefully” but now “it openly broadcasts about defending (cleansing) Ukraine as a whole” and insisting that for that “task,” “all means are good.”

“Ukrainian authorities did nothing to make Crimea Ukrainian. When Kunitsyn was in power and nine million hryvnias were allocated to develop Ukrainian culture, in Sevastopol the money was simply stolen.”
